Percy surveyed the kitchen countertops. They were covered in sticky mixing bowls and crumb-encrusted trays. "Not again."
"I'm sorry." Oliver gave Percy a hangdog look.
Percy sighed. "You're not."
"I said I was, didn't I?" Oliver threw himself down on the couch and started flipping through a magazine.
Percy sat down beside him. "You've said that before." He took the magazine away.
"Meant it then too." Oliver grabbed for the magazine but Percy held it just out of reach.
"Of course you did." It was another one of those bloody cookery weeklies. Percy set it neatly onto the side table and grabbed Oliver's wrists when he tried to pick it up.
"I told you I tried." Oliver wrenched free and moved away from Percy.
Not this again. "You always try. That isn't the problem. The problem is what you actually do." If only Oliver would make an effort, Percy thought, he wouldn't have to deal with this all the time.
"Why does it bother you so much?" Oliver made a face.
"You know very well."
"If I did, would I keep asking?"
"You would, yes." Percy began to wonder why he was even putting up with this. They weren't suited, really. Maybe he should leave, revise his five-year plan.
"You worry too much, you know." Oliver looked over at Percy. He was smiling now, but Percy refused to let that move him.
He frowned. "Did I say that was why?"
Oliver stretched. "I don't see why you have to be so cryptic. I said I was sorry. Now I'm going to bed." He held out his hand to Percy, an invitation.
Percy didn't take it. "Leaving me to clean up your mess, then? Again?"
Oliver put his hand on Percy's thigh and looked up at him. "Look, just come with me next time." Oliver was always trying to get Percy to cook with him, but Percy didn't think that would work out too well. They would probably drive each other mad.
"Why would you think I..." Percy trailed off as he looked down at Oliver's hopeful smile. Oliver was Percy's one weakness and try as he might, he couldn't seem to overcome it. So he decided not to try anymore, at least not for tonight.
"Yes?"
Percy leaned in and kissed Oliver. "All right."
