When Flint's mates caught them together, Flint menaced them a bit
and they fell into line.

When Wood's mates caught them together, Wood broke it off. Flint
blacked Wood's eye and soon everyone knew.

After a week, Flint found Wood sitting on the floor in a disused
hallway. Flint sat down beside him. "All right?"

"Not so bad."

"You didn't have your eye fixed."

"It's fine."

"Where are your friends?"

"Avoiding me."

"I'll deal with them."

"I'll manage."

No more left to say. I'll count to twenty, Flint thought.

He was only at thirteen when Wood leaned over and kissed him.
